Introduction

Here is the perfect place for men, women, girls and boys to store jewelry and other precious little keepsakes.

My primary goal with this project was to design a box that didn't utilize mitered corners for construction— because I know how much some of you "love" making miters. I opted to borrow from the scroll sawn basket making method developed a while back by a couple of my scroll saw buddies, John Nelson and Bill Guimond. The end result is a box with four side panels created by cutting and stacking alternating layers of 1/2" thick wood in contrasting colors. The pieces have the insides cut out of them to form a hollow box for storing treasures of all kinds.

Inside the box is a Swiss Reuge music box mechanism. It is mounted on a very thin piece of wood which serves as a sounding board to resonate and amplify the rich, quality tones of the music box as it plays the song "On Eagle's Wings." On top of the box is a gorgeous overlay of a stylized eagle cut from very thin contrasting wood.

It's a unique design that is a little different from the scroll sawn jewelry boxes that we've grown accustomed to making thus far . . . so have some fun trying something new.

This is a fairly easy project to make, but I discovered the hard way that there are a couple "little" things you need to do to ensure that the panels stack up and line up just right.

First, as usual, we encourage you to make copies of the patterns, saving the originals for future use. With this project, please note that every pattern is labeled to show the left side of the box, with the front facing you. When you have photocopies made, insist that each copy be made with the left side of the pattern placed at the lead edge of the paper. The reason for doing this is that copiers often distort images. By placing each pattern on the copier in the same direction, distortion is made the same on each pattern, ensuring that they will line up when the layers are stacked.

Second, while sawing the various parts, mark the wood (inconspicuously) to indicate the left side and front of each piece. Also, when sawing, strive to keep the scroll saw blade cutting right down the middle of the pattern line.
