This is the simplest method, yjj THE PAPER SNIPPING PATTERNS OF BETTY CHRISTY by Marilyn Carmin Although I've been scrolling for almost 20 years, I still have a vivid memory of a paper silhouette design I saw when I was just starting out. I can best describe this design as a "caricature" of a Victorian home. Hach room and floor, from the attic to the basement, was filled with silhouettes of furniture, household items and toys. Cut with scissors out of black paper, it depicted a delightful slice of Victorian life. I was intrigued by paper snipping patterns and since that time I have used many such designs on my scroll saw. This past summer, while attending a trade show, I ran across some paper snipping patterns which reminded mc of that early design. After meeting the artist, Betty Christy, I was surprised to learn that she was not only the designer of the patterns in front of me, but also of that long ago Victorian home! Betty, mother of four, grandmother of nine and great-grandmother of three, has been involved with crafts and the crafts business for many years. Her interest began when she was young and although il was not. considered to be very "lady like" at the time, she took shop classes all four of her high school years. Betty had planned to go into the medical field but college was interrupted by World War IJ. While her husband flew in the Army Air Corps, Betty becamc more involved in crafts. In the late 1940's she opened her first store. By the Different Length Brads 1"{25mm) WiereW line fools are Arrow Fastener Co.. Inc.. 271 Mayhill Street, Saddle Brook. Retail, wholesale, teaching and deisgn, Betty's craft involvement covers all of these. Her patterns have a delightful Victorian look with a little whimsy, a little sassiness and a lot of fan. Although most of her crafts involve paper, Betty has transferred many of her designs to wood and encourages others to do so. Betty's philosophy toward designing is simple— give the crafler something that they will enjoy and be succcssful at and they will come back for more. Some patterns need minor adjustments, but many of her designs can be transferred directly to wood. 1 encourage you to break out of the mold of using only scroll saw patterns and try something new! Ilere are just a few hints. Small silhouettes can be made into Christmas ornaments. Combine several small silhouettes to make one larger project. Some of the smaller inside cuts can be eliminated without affecting the overall design, watch for small or thin cuts that will weaken the piece. When combining silhouettes, veining or small cuts in the wood can be used for definition.
