Pocket hole jigs vary in price, but you can get a jig and matching bit for between $20 and $60. Before you start drilling lots of holes in the ribs, make sure the depth of the drill bit stop will not allow the screws to poke through the desk's top piece.

Because some of the drawer holes could be left empty, I placed the pocket holes 5" in from the ends of the ribs, and I added two more holes 11" in from the ends, for a total of four screws per rib. Two screws are used per divider, spaced 3" in from either end.

One other thing before you start driving screws: I used a clear lacquer finish for the top and didn't want to spray a finish into the drawer spaces after assembly. Rather, I finished all the ribs and dividers after pre-drilling for the pocket holes. I also sprayed a finish on the underside of the top and the inner surface of the bottom piece, after taping off any areas where glue would be applied.

Glue is a good idea for even more strength when attaching the ribs. Wood movement isn't an issue, but don't use too much or you'll be doing a lot of clean-up.

With the ribs and dividers screwed in place, put the bottom in place and mark, pre-drill and countersink the rib locations on that piece. I used lV4"-long screws to attach the bottom and ran the first screws in each rib 2" in from the edge of the bottom piece.

That' s it for the desktop for now. Sand and finish both the underside and top of the torsion box, then set it aside for the glue to dry while you make the legs.

Spider Legs

While the torsion box design is pretty clever, the legs are equally ingenious. The balance between using as little material as possible and still maintaining strength is well met with these legs.
