Mat board comes in a wide variety of colors and textures and you'll have to select the best combination for your picture. The window opening in the mat must be cut carefully for a clean, neat effect. Keep in mind that the bottom border width should be about 15 percent wider than the top and side borders; a typical mat has a 3i4" bottom border and 3" borders at the top and sides.

The cut should be made with a slight bevel showing, using a sharp utility knife and a steel straightedge. If you've never framed your own pictures before, chances are you'll be so pleased with the results that you'll want to invest in a mat cutter. These are not too expensive and are available at artists' supplies stores.
