Colonial Wall Box

Probably the most popular of colonial-wall-box reproductions, the original pine box was most likely used for storing candles. There have been many variations, but this particular design has remained a favorite for well over two hundred years.

All parts of the box are made from W pine. The box ends are rabbeted to receive the front and back and this joint is glued. The bottom is held with small finishing nails.

All parts of the box should be well sanded prior to assembly, and all edges well rounded to simulate many years of wear.

Many small household items of this type were painted. Our forefathers had a tendency to disguise pine, sometimes with a coat of milk paint, and sometimes with painted graining to simulate mahogany or other costly woods. Modern tastes run to antique pine stain protected with a coat or two of low-luster varnish.
