This fence is just a piece of V* inch plywood screwed to the face of the miter gauge. Set the fence as shown in Fig. 5, so that its lower edge just clears the table top. The problem of creep can be completely overcome by cementing sandpaper to the face of the fence. This will provide all the friction needed to overcome any tendency of the workpiece to move while being cut. Now that we're all set to cut a perfect miter joint, let's try making a 45 degree crosscut on the ends of two pieces of scrap. After completing the cut, join the pieces and test the true-ness of the cuts by placing a square against the inside corner. The square should make perfect contact along both pieces while the face joint remains closed (Fig. 6A). If the two pieces must be joined at an angle greater or less than 90 degrees, you can check the accuracy of the joint by laying an adjustable protractor against the outside corner as shown in Fig. 6B.
