to drill vertical holes for the fitting of dowel pins to reinforce an edge joint between two boards. Edge joining of boards is a common operation when wide boards or panels are needed.

Many woodworkers still feel that edge joints need to be reinforced with spaced dowel pins as shown in Fig. 6, but it has been established that well fitted and glued edge joints do not require dowel pins...so spare yourself a lot of tedious and unnecessary work and omit the pins.

Apart from additional mechanical strength, another advantage of using angled dowels is that the use of a doweling jig is unnecessary; the holes can be easily drilled freehand. Commercial doweling jigs are rather bothersome to use and often cause more problems than they prevent.

Secure dowel joints begin with the dowel stock itself. It's sold at most hardware and building supply outlets, usually in three foot lengths, in sizes from V» to 1 in. diameter. Hobby shops sell dowel stock as small as 1/16 in. diameter. The smaller sizes are useful as locking pegs for other types of joints.

Dowel diameters are chosen according to the thickness of the parts being joined. A rule of thumb is to use dowels of a diameter the same as, or a little less than half the thickness of the stock. Thus, for lumber of V* to Vt inch thickness, a ³/> inch diameter dowel is used.

Most woodworkers buy their dowel stock in three foot lengths and cut pins as needed. Properly prepared dowel pins are important for successful joints and there is a fair amount of work involved in preparing them.
