HOLE5AW Beginning Woodworker (cont'd) When you've got a lot of relatively small circular holes to cut, the best approach is to use something other than a compass saw to guarantee that all the holes will end up exactly alike. For holes up to 3 in. in diameter, an expansion bit chucked in a brace will do a good job (Fig. 9). These bits are adjustable to cut holes from Vt to 3 in. diameter. Like ordinary auger bits, they have a screw tip so boring completely through from one side will result in bad splintering. When using an expansion bit, or any auger with a screw tip, bore only until the screw starts to emerge from the opposite side; then remove the auger and complete the hole by boring from the other side. Another solution to the problem of making a lot of perfectly circular cutouts up to 4 in. diameter is to use a hole saw (Fig. 10).
