I stock (wooden balls) up to 2]Jl in. in diameter—something the other jigs can't do. The three models are identical except for the hole configurations in the bushing block. The Model 1000 has five permanently drilled hushing holes in the block for '/•*, Vifi. Vs. 7/», and '/: in. dowels. The Model 2000 has four hushing holes: two are permanently drilled holes in the 7/h> and '/3 in. sizes: the other two arc tapped to accept six removable guide bushings, which enable you lo drill paired holes in the '/4, Vtfc and '/x in. sizes. The paired holes are on a Vj in. ccntcr-to-center spacing. On the Model 2500 all four holes are lapped to accept the six bushings in the above three sizes, enabling you to space the paired holes on 3/4, I 'A. 2. or 2'A in. Dowl-It Model 2500 May/June IV93 General Model H40 centers. Unlike the other two models, (he 2500 does not have 7/i& and '/- in. hole sizes. You can drill off-center holes w ith all three jigs by placing a shim between one of the clamp jaws and the slock. During my research, I found two catalog suppliers (Garrelt Wade and Trend-lines) that carry a Taiwanese copy of the Dow l-li 2000. The copy is nearly identical, although not quite as well machined, but it costs about $15 less than the Dow l-It. General Model 840 This jig has a revolving lurret bushing block wiih six hole sizes (Vift. '/-», s/mn Vs. and 7* in.), and will accept stock up to 4 in. thick. To set up the jig, select the desired hole size, clamp the jig to the stock, then slide the bushing carrier on its rods to locate the hole either on- or off-center. Then lock the bushing carrier in place with a set screw and drill ihe hole. This jig makes edge-to-edge joints only. By the way. it's also sold by Scars under the Craftsman label. General Model 841 "Dial-Selling" Jig This jig is meant to complement ihe General Model 840 above: it makes edge-to-face (corner and T) joints only. It has ihree hushing sizes ('/•». and s/« in.) and will dowel slock from lo I'/« in. thick. The unique feature on this jig is a calibrated dial in V?2 in. increments: you sci the dial to the thickness of the stock lo be joined and the jig automatically centers the holes.
