would probably be better lor our task. Be sure to practice with the tool on some scrap ash before working on the bat.

To make it easier to burn the oval, vvc incorporated a template (see illustration) made from aluminum flashing. The flashing, which is sold at most building supply outfits, only measures about >/64 in. thick, but that's enough to help guide the burning tool.

Start making the template by cutting the flashing to about 5 in. w ide and 7 in. long. The oval shape of the template will be cut using the scroll saw, but to insure a smooth edge when culling the thin, soft aluminum, you'll first need to secure it to a piece of plywood.

Cui a piece of l/-t in. thick plywood to the same size as the flashing, then use rubber ccmeni to temporarily join the flashing to the plywood. Now. transfer the full-size profile of the oval to the center of the flashing, then cut it out w ith the scroll saw. (You'll need to first bore a hole in ihe oval in order to insert the scroll saw blade.) If necessary, smooth the edge w ith a half-round tile.

Now. remove the template from the plywood and rub oil any remaining glue. Once all the glue is olf. secure the template to the bat wiih a few pieces of

masking tape. We found the template wrapped around the bat somewhat better when we cut the template dow n to about 3 in. wide by 5 in. long.

As shown in the grid pattern, locate the template so that its center is located about IO'/2 in. from the top end of the bat. Also, it's important to keep in mind that the logo should always be on the face grain of the wood, not the edge grain. Batters are taught to grip the bat so that the logo faces them. That way. when the bat is swung, the ball strikes the edge grain, which lends to drive the ball harder.

With the template secured, use the wood burning tool to trace the oval. Work carefully, as the grain of the wood some

times tends to force the point of the tool away from the template.

Next, remove the template, then use a pencil lo mark in your lettering. Once marked, use the woodbuming tool freehand to burn-in the letters.

Two coats of a water-based poiyurelhane samish will complete ihe project, but we expect if w ill signal the start of lots of ballfield fun.
