I r Of course, since our readers are an especially bright bunch, we had lo design one thai would provide an intellectual challenge well above ihe level of your average magazine reader. Our solution was diabolically simple. We put a ball into the maze, but added a "little" wrinkle—it's completely hidden from view throughout the end-to-end journey. Should you need some help, though, don't despair. We've marked the path to success on the top view. The project is made from walnut, with maple inlays, but any number of other wood combinations will also look good. You won't need much stock, so check your scrap box before starling. Also, don't be afraid to experiment and design your own maze patterns. By changing the location and depth of the holes, all sorts of maze designs can be created. Our ball is actually a 7/l6 in. diameter steel ball-bearing. If you can't find one locally, we've provide a source for it and the '/8 in. brass rod that's also needed (see Kit .Source). Unless you have a sharp eye and a steady hand, you'll need to use a drill press to bore the holes. You'll also need a good quality '/2 in. diameter drill bit. preferably the brad-point style. Avoid twist drill bits, as they tend to wander, and that could be a problem drilling some of the deep holes. Vz. t>tA.- 48 t he Woodworker's Journal |
