Make the Pinwheel and Fan Carvings

Wont to try a simple decorative corving technique? The pinwheel and fans will enhance the appearance of your chest without severely taxing your skills or patierKe. Although we show foirly large-scale carvings, you con vary the size of the radii to dress up just about any piece, from a small jewelry box to o large kitchen cabinet.

Step 2

Make depth cuts

The Pinwheel

Step I: Using a compass with two sharp points {rather than o pencil lead), scratch a 5"-rodius circle. Cut the surface enough that you can fallow the line easily with a knife. (We used a pair of dividers with sharp points. This enabled us to scratch and cut in one operation. If you don't own such a compass, try fashioning a homemade trammel that will hold an X-Acto knife.) Using a protractor and pencil, divide the circle into) 5° segments, and mark the perimeter at each point.

Step 2: Using the same 5 "-radius compass setting, locate the compass center-point from one of the 15" marks, and scratch an ate. Wove the centetpoint up one segment, and scratch o second arc. Repeat this process until you've scratched all of the otcs.

Step 3: Using a sharp knife, such as a chipcarving knife, make a tapered cut along each arc. This cut should taper smoothly from about 14" deep at the perimeter up to the surface at the centerpoint. Moke a similariy tapered cut olong the perimeter of each segment, cutting V" deep where it meets the V" arc cut, then angle it up to the surface where it meets the adjoining ore. Finally, make an angled paring cut olong each of the oics, clearing the pinwheel effect.

The Fan

Step 1: Scratch a 5"-radius quadrant ('/«of a circle) at each of the four corners, then divide each of these 90° quadrants into 10 equal 9° ores, marking each arc on the perimeter. Scratch a straight line from each mark to the centerpoint.

Step 2: Using o sharp knife, moke a //-deep cut olong eoch ate line. At the perimeter, make a cut that topets in depth from about / at eoch arc line up to the sutfoce in the orea between the art lines.

Step 3: Make o series of poring cuts olong the sides of eoch ore to create on evenly rounded convex profile.

Step 2

Using the same dividers setting, scribe the arcs
