Furniture Society 2004 In the culmination of her travels around the country this year, Woodworker's Journal reporter LiLi Jackson spent time with over 300 other woodworkers and furniture makers at the Furniture Society's 8th Annual Conference in Savannah, Georgia.

Under the theme of "Embracing Technology and Honoring Tradition," the Society brought people together for demonstrations, discussions and shows.

Of particular interest to her, LiLi said, were discussions on emerging artists and the use of ecologically sound materials in building. She also attended demonstrations on steam bending, veneering, inlay and patination. These sessions were among those offered by over 75 presenters at this year's affair.

While the Furniture Society's conferences concentrate more on discussions and shows than on hands-on experiences, the ability to talk to others is invaluable, LiLi said. "Everybody there was incredibly talented. It's amazing to be around people who are so passionate about furniture." The popular "slide wars" sessions (when attendees show pictures of their work) offered a chance to see what others were doing. "There was everything from 'this one's in my mom's living room,'

Works from award winners like Garry Knox Bennett and others were on display at the Furniture Society conference.

Black & Decker Goes Shopping

Picks Up Venerable Tool Lines

Black & Decker Corporation announced this summer that it had signed an agreement to purchase the Tools Group from Pentair, including the Porter-Cable, Delta, DeVilbiss Air Power, Oldham Saw and FLEX brands. The DeWalt brand is already a division of Black & Decker.

The acquisition, which must be approved by federal agencies, is scheduled to take effect in the fourth quarter of the year. Until then, it's too soon to answer specific questions about the various brands and factories involved in the merger, Black & Decker representatives said. Pentair is headquartered in Golden Valley, Minnesota, while Black & Decker's corporate offices are in Maryland.
