table, guiding the cuts against the fence. ^ Stop the cuts short of the ends; they'll help you maintain control over the piece while rounding it in four passes.

Routing the Half-lap Joints

The half-lap joints are cut with a handheld router and a jig. You assemble the jig around the pieces to be joined. The jig needs to be reassembled for each cut.

Assemble the legs, struts and jig by following these three steps (see photo and Drawing on previous page):

1. Place the strut face-down on the benchtop. Clamp jig rails

against the edges so they're flush to the face that's down. These are "backup" rails, because they prevent splintering at the strut's edges.

2. Turn the piece over and align a rail on the shoulder line of the lap. Make sure the leg, when set against this rail, will arc in the right direction. Screw this "guide" rail to the backup rails beneath it.

3. Place the leg against the

The easiest way to install the leg/strut assemblies is to hang them on the upended cart bed with clamped blocks of scrap. Then clamp the legs to the side panels.
