or strut, marking the hole centers.

While the cross members are clamped in place, mark the legs for the holes you must drill for the tie rod. I slipped a center punch into the cross member grooves and tapped it with a hammer. Mark the struts for the axle holes as well.

Now break down the assembly to drill the holes. When you drill the dowel holes, be sure you don't bore all the way through. Use a drill press to be safe. In addition to the 3/8" dowel holes, 1/2" axle holes and 1/4" tie rod holes, bore a socket in each strut for the handle rod using a l1/'-diameter Forstner bit. The sockets should

only be about 5/8" deep.

Dry-assemble the frame on the cart bed to ensure that the dowel holes align and are deep enough. Measure between the struts and cut the handle rod to fit. Fit the tie rod into its groove. Slide the axle into place, mount the wheels, and mark the axle for trimming and for the hitch pin holes that still need to be drilled. You can even set the cart on its wheels and mark the legs for trimming to final length.

When it all fits, glue and clamp the lap joints. After the glue sets,

The author's simple solution to accurately transferring the locations of the cross member dowel holes to the legs is to insert dowel points first, then clamp the parts together.
