4 As years go by. paint will often get brittle and begin to crack. Called •"crackling" or "crazing," il adds considerably to the antique look of a piece of painted furniture. Steps 4 and 5 explain how to crackle ihe paint.

Mix two parts water with three parts liquid hide glue, then brush il on the entire painted surface (Photo 4>. Put it on a little heavier in any areas you wanl a bit more crackling. There is no need to be fussy here—just slap the stuff on tike you'd baste a Thanksgiving turkey. Lei this coat dry overnight. If liquid hide glue is not available locally, it can be ordered from Constantinc's. 2050 Eastchester Road. Bronx. NY 10461: tel. 1-800-223-8087.

5 This is perhaps the trickiest step in ihe process, so use ihe test board to get a good feel for the brushing technique. Working a small area at a time, brush on one coat of a flat yellow latex paint (Pholo 5). We used a color that mosl folks would call mustard. When applying the paint, be careful not to overbrush it. The glue applied in Step 4 is water reactive, and it will begin lo break down if you use more that a couple of strokes. The yellow paint will start lo crack as il dries on top of the hide glue.

6 A close look ai antique painted furniture often shows a few areas where the paint has chipped away. To duplicate this look, press the palm of your hand against the yellow paint, then lift it off. (You can do this anytime after the paint is applied, as long as it hasn't dried). Some of the yellow paini w ill come off on the palm of your hand, giving a * 'chipped paint"' look to the finish. Rinse your hand and repeat wherever you want to chip some paini. Try noi lo overdo this siep. though, as il usually works best when done sparingly (Photo 6).

Now, repeal Steps 5 and 6. always working small areas, until the project is completed. Allow the paint to dry thoroughly.

7 With a bucket of water and a clean rag. scrub off some of the yellow paini lo expose ihe red underneath. (We found thai those synthetic steel wool pads made by 3M were helpful here.) As you did in Siep 3. work in (hose areas that would have been exposed lo wear. Let Ihe finish dry completely (Photo 7).

8 Mix up some stain using one part Minwax Dark Wralnul and one pari Minwax Colonial Maple. Apply one coal to all ihe finished surfaces and lei ii dry (Photo 8). To complete the process, apply a coat of a good brown paste wax lo Ihe entire finish, then buff it out to a soli lusier with a clean cloth.

The lop of the table was finished with one coat of Minwax Golden Oak wood finish. Once dry, we added three coals of water-based salin polyurelhane.
