clamping the cheeks together (Fig. 13). Be sure to check with a square to make sure that the parts meet at 90 degrees before gluing and clamping. A bit of waxed paper under a piece of scrap serving as a clamp pad will prevent marring of the work.

This joint can be cut easily with the table saw and a dado head. Start by marking the face sides of the members, then lay out shoulder lines and half-lap cuts as described for the hand-tool method. Starting with a rail, mount a dado head set for a wide cut and elevate the cutters to just graze the line scribed to mark the half-lap cut (Fig. 14).

With the rail face side up and against the miter gauge, slide it left or right until the left side of the dado cutter aligns with the shoulder line, then while holding the rail firmly against the miter gauge (set at zero), make a pass over the cutters. Moving the workpiece from right to left (if you're standing on the left side of the dado head), make as many passes as necessary to clean out the waste, leaving a wide rabbet on the end of the rail (Fig, 15).
