Cutting Capacity

On jointers, the Iwo main determiners of cutting capacity are maximum cutting width and maximum depth of cut. Jointers arc generally "sized" by their maximum cutting width or the widest board the> can plane. This, in turn, is determined by knife length, which is generally equal to. or slightly less than, the width of the jointer bed. The units I tested have maximum cutting widths from 41/x in. (Sears 23622 and Reliant DD394) to 6>/k in. (Delta 37-070, Ryobi JP 155). See the Chart on page 69.

Maximum cutting depth is determined by the maximum distance you can sel the infeed table below the cutterhead. Most machines have a maximum depth of •/s in. I might add here lhal you usually gel better results it vou take several light

cuts, rather than one deep one. While all of the machines I tested had enough power to take full-depth cuts in the w idest stock I could feed through them. I found lhal I had to slow ihe feed rale way down, to avoid several problems: l-irsi. the motors on most jointers (noi just the benchtop variety) will slow down appreciably if you force them to lake heavy cuts—this not only shortens motor life, but also results in a rougher cut (see Variable Speed). Second, it's rough on the knives. Third, il usually doesn't take any longer to lake two or three shallow culs al a fast feed rate than it does to take one deep cut at a slow rate. Taking shallower culs also minimizes wood tearoul. I found that a '/i6 in. culling depth is a good average for most w<x)ds.
